Milestone Birthday Wishes by Age

Some birthdays get a card. Others get a venue. Milestone years carry more weight, and the wording has to carry it too — a message that works for a casual 34th falls flat at a 50th party where three generations are listening.

Each age page below has wishes written specifically for that number, plus notes on what to avoid. The general-purpose ones underneath work for any milestone if you're short on time.

The One Rule for Milestone Messages

Age jokes are fine when they come from a peer and land badly when they come from someone younger. If you're twenty-five writing to someone turning fifty, drop the "over the hill" material entirely and say something about what they've built instead. If you're both turning fifty this year, joke away — you've earned it.

Working out the exact age? The age calculator gives years, months and days, which is useful for first-birthday cards and speeches.

What counts as a milestone birthday?

Traditionally the 1st, 16th, 18th, 21st and every round decade. In practice a 25th, 65th or 75th often gets the same treatment, and cultural milestones vary — quinceañeras at 15, and 60th and 80th celebrations that carry particular weight in many South Asian and East Asian families.
