Belated Birthday Wishes
Forgetting a birthday is survivable. What makes it worse is the over-apology — four paragraphs of self-flagellation puts the recipient in the position of having to reassure you, which is not a gift. Own it in one line, then send an actual birthday message. That's the whole technique, and these ten follow it.

How Late Is Too Late?
A day or two: send it as normal with a brief acknowledgement. Nobody minds. A week: apologise once and offer something concrete — a call, a coffee, a drink. A month or more: don't pretend it's belated. Just get in touch, mention you'd missed it, and make a plan. The message matters less than the contact.
If it's someone close, call rather than text. A late phone call reads as care; a late text can read as clearing a list.

Questions
Should I send a gift to make up for it?
Only if you were going to anyway. A gift that's obviously guilt-driven puts the awkwardness back on them.
What if I got the date wrong entirely?
Say so plainly and note the right one somewhere permanent. The countdown tool will remind you next year.
