16th Birthday Wishes
Sixteen is a delicate one to write for. The person receiving it is old enough to spot a cliché instantly and young enough that anything too heavy feels like a lecture. The rule is simple: say something respectful about who they're becoming, and don't mention how fast they've grown up more than once.

What to Avoid at Sixteen
Skip comments on appearance, comparisons to siblings, and anything about how they used to be so small. Also skip driving jokes unless they're actually learning — the legal age varies by country and it's a sore point for anyone who has to wait. If you want to say something meaningful, praise a decision they made or a thing they worked at rather than a talent, which is a far better thing to hear at that age.
Writing to your own child? Son and daughter have longer options.

Is a sweet sixteen still a thing?
In the US and increasingly elsewhere, yes — often a proper party. In the UK, sixteen is usually lower-key and eighteen gets the big celebration.
Money or a gift?
At sixteen, money or a voucher is genuinely welcome and not considered lazy.
