Religious Birthday Wishes
A birthday blessing is one of the older forms of birthday message, and it still does something a secular wish can't: it places the year ahead in someone's care rather than just hoping for the best. The ten below include general blessings that suit most faiths, plus a few written in specifically Christian and Muslim registers.

Choosing the Right Wording
Match the register to their tradition rather than yours. Numbers 1, 4, 9 and 10 are non-denominational and safe for anyone who'd welcome a blessing. Numbers 2, 3 and 8 read as Christian; 6 and 7 as Muslim. If you're not sure of someone's beliefs, the general blessings work and won't cause discomfort.
Two practical notes: some Jehovah's Witnesses don't observe birthdays at all, so a blessing at a different time is more welcome than a card. And in cultures where birthday blessings are traditionally given by elders, the wording is usually more formal than a friend's message — worth keeping in mind for a grandparent's card.

Questions
Can I combine a blessing with a normal wish?
Yes, and most people do — a warm personal line followed by a blessing is a very common and well-received format.
Are these suitable for the birthday of someone who has died?
Yes, and there is a dedicated collection for it, including what to write to the family rather than about the person.
