1st Birthday Wishes

A first birthday card is really two messages in one. The baby can't read it, so the words are for the parents now and for the child in twenty years — which is why the good ones say something about the year rather than just "happy 1st birthday". Below are ten covering both audiences.

10 First Birthday Wishes

Drops into every wish below
  1. Happy 1st birthday. One year of you and nobody can remember what life was like before.

  2. You've learned to sit, crawl, shout and charm an entire room. Not bad for twelve months. Happy birthday.

  3. Happy first birthday, little one. You've been the best kind of interruption.

  4. One whole year. Thousands of photographs. Not nearly enough sleep. Entirely worth it — happy birthday.

  5. Happy 1st birthday to the newest and loudest member of the family. We're all completely taken with you.

  6. Congratulations to the parents, who have done a full year of the hardest job going. And happy birthday to the small person responsible.

  7. Happy first birthday. You won't remember today, but everyone here will.

  8. One down, and what a year it's been. Wishing you a lifetime of them just as loved as this one.

  9. Happy 1st birthday. May you keep that curiosity and never lose the laugh.

  10. To one year of first times — first smile, first steps, first cake. Happy birthday, and go easy on the icing.

Writing for the Parents Too

First birthdays are as much a marker for the parents as the child, and a line acknowledging that is always well received: they've done twelve months on broken sleep. Say something about how the baby's turned out — settled, funny, determined — because parents notice when someone has actually paid attention to their child rather than sending a stock card.

If you're keeping the card as a keepsake, write the date and your relationship on the back. In twenty years, "from Auntie Jo, June 2026" is the part that matters. The age calculator gives the exact months if you want to note them.

Questions

What do you write in a first birthday card from a grandparent?

Something to be read later: a line about the day they were born, or a hope for their life. Grandparents' first-birthday cards are the ones most likely to be kept.

How much should I spend on a gift?

Small and practical is fine. At one, the wrapping paper is usually the highlight.
