Birthday Wishes for Someone You Barely Know

A new colleague, a neighbour, a friend of a friend, a cousin you've met twice — these are the messages people freeze on, because the risk is sounding either cold or oddly intimate. The answer is short, warm and general. No inside references, no assumptions about their life, no jokes that need context.

What Not to Include

No age references. You don't know how they feel about it. No assumptions about their plans, family or partner. "Hope you and the family have a great day" is a misfire when there isn't one. No jokes that need history. Humour without shared context reads as strange. No over-familiar sign-offs. "Lots of love" to a new colleague creates more awkwardness than warmth.

If it's a group card, one line and your name is exactly right. If it's a neighbour, verbal is often better than written — a short "happy birthday, heard it was today" over the fence does more than a card.

Questions

Should I send anything at all if I hardly know them?

If it's been mentioned to you directly or you've been handed the card, yes. A short wish is always well received; nobody has ever resented one.

What about someone I only know online?

Keep it to the platform where you know them, and keep it short. Moving to a private message can feel like an escalation.
